“residents are being directed to an interactive map”
This seems problematic, do they not have emergency broadcasts anymore?
Agreed. They should leave legacy fail proof technology in place.
I wounder if someone sold them on a bunch of “efficiencies” by dropping radio, tv and whatnot in favour of a web based solution? And now that I think on it, was Canada not listed lately as having some of the worst rural cell/internet infrastructure in the world?
Are you telling me we pay the highest in the world for mobile plans AND have the shittiest cell infrastructure. Jesus christ…
Yes. Essential services with bloated prices and really low reliability.
But think of the profits shawgers is making for their shareholders! Mission accomplished!
I have 200mb of data and it turns off when I run out. If I ever get caught in an emergency, I’m screwed.
Plus, half the time their website seems to crash.
How do you operate on 200mb data? You might as well not have data at this rate. You can watch what, like a few minutes of video before your data is up? That’s some serious BS, assuming you’re in Canada.
I’m in the US, haven’t seen a phone plan with less than unlimited anytime recently, although I know they exist. Ironically, even my ISP has a data cap (1.2TB/mo last I checked), but my phone plan doesn’t (but does throttle after a while).
Just don’t watch video on data.
I live in Kelowna and am just on the edge of an evacuation alert area and I don’t have a radio or cable so I can’t say if those exist but the map is helpful.
Been checking that thing ever 5 minutes today…
It doesn’t work on my phone. Also they’re not making it easy to find. It should be a giant link right at the top of every article, instead it’s regular size text buried in the middle of the article.
Also they’re not making it easy to find.
I googled “emergency alert map Kelowna” and found a really great candidate.
Install the app
Glad it is up and working for you. good luck.
This is the best summary I could come up with:
On Friday morning, officials said a number of properties were destroyed in the Trader Cove area and Bear Lake Road north of West Kelowna.
Due to the high number of properties under evacuation orders and alerts, residents are being directed to an interactive map to search by address to find out how individual homes and businesses are affected.
Everyone covered by an evacuation alert is asked to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice as the province faces a highly volatile wildfire situation.
Emergency Management Minister Bowinn Ma says the wildfire service has "significant resources’’ on the West Kelowna fire, but she urges everyone in the region to prepare in case they are ordered to leave.
Wildfire Service, says the cold front that began sweeping the southern half of the province Thursday is bringing in high, unpredictable winds and dry lightning that create the potential for new fires and growth on those they are trying to contain.
DriveBC said Thursday that wildfire activity has closed a stretch of Highway 1 in both directions between Hope and Lytton, the community 150 kilometres northeast of Vancouver that was almost completely destroyed by fire in 2021.
The original article contains 1,106 words, the summary contains 181 words. Saved 84%. I’m a bot and I’m open source!
Easy to reduce the words when you just remove spaces and combine words randomly :D
Still saves me the hassle of opening the link. I’m very glad this bot exists.
Yeah I was just kidding around, didn’t realize it would touch a nerve like that.
It didn’t, I just saw many people complaining about the bot lately
Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean you specifically. I just mean my original comment is getting downvoted.
Oh boy, time for our yearly provincial emergency declaration! …Wait, wasn’t this the second one this year? 🤔
I wonder if this fire season will slow down the insane immigration to BC. I mean I am certainly starting to wonder if it’s a good idea to settle down here at all.
The xenophobic comment was the 4th one down.
We should be better Canadians.
How was that xenophobic??
I was more referring to other Canadians relocating to BC en masse
It’s like some of you people are brainwashed that “immigration” is an unspeakable word
Immigration isn’t only for an international context but can also be used for people that immigrate from one city to another. One can be xenophobic if one dislikes the idea of people moving where they live (be that for prejudice of other’s culturies or for a belief that their home city will be worse due to immigration). People will always move where they please and using that as argument is just tiring. We need ways to regulate housing and stop people from profiting over it.
Why would you encourage people to move somewhere that is constantly on fire or flooding?
So those are things that happen in all of BC? Guess I am just lucky then.
All towns in BC have quite high wildfire risk pretty much. Aside from those in fog zone
All I know is that despite all evidence that our world is increasingly turning into an inferno, that humans are still pro-human and will continue to want more humans. I guess we’re just going to have to reap the predictable consequences of our obsession with overpopulating ourselves.
Hold up friend, you’re really close on stepping on really dangerous ground (fascism).
No, I don’t think depopulating the Earth is a fascist concept. I think murdering specific groups of people is fascist. I’m just talking about the unsustainability of the human plague.
I am honestly in good faith attempting to argue that this way of thought is a slippery slope for other things that don’t necessarily include murdering specific groups of people and can still be considered fascist. For example, which solutions would you suggest?
To be clear, I am not saying I disagree with you in the regard that in our current society more people means more pollution and a higher rate of environmental destruction. Your wording just seems off.
I’m not sure what a solution is but I do think that we should encourage people to not have children, stop handing out the baby bonus, and reduce immigration. I feel these moves can provide a (non-genocidal) way to relieving the pressures of human overpopulation. For example, Japan is doing great work in reducing their population, a trend that will reduce the strain of housing and services in that country.
If you check fertility rates you will see that people aren’t willing to have children like they used to do. And it doesn’t seem that Japan is seeing their population decreasing as a good thing.
Only the capitalists care
“Okanagan Lake Resort was consumed in the fire.”
Man, I hope Ogopogo is OK!

Yep! You familiar?
Not a joke, first thing I thought of when I saw Okanagan Lake.
It’s one thing to say it’s not a joke (obviously it’s not), but then everyone’s telling this guy it’s not reddit, yet are piling all over him like it is.
Obviously emotions are high, that’s valid. But it’s just a stupid joke, like I’m 100% positive this guy meant no harm. Let’s move on. And I’m concerned about Ogopogo, and all of the Okanagan, like I think everyone else is, including this guy.
People forget too that Ogopogo is a HUGE part of the tourist component there, just like Nessie in Scotland.

I really want nothing but the best for the region which so closely identified with Ogopogo.
Canada has actually used a “State of Emergency” correctly!
Either the forests are not being managed well or someone is starting these fires. If it is arson, it is some environmental terrorist likely trying to prove a point by destroying forests and communities.
Draught, and storms with not so much rain but lighting causing fires. Then a week of a heat dome with a subsequent cold front that brought in high winds and pushed fires out at rapid speeds
Cam, no one here wants to hear about your conspiracy nonsense. Please go away.
I would like to hear it and I would prefer them to stay
But I respectfully disagree with the theory of intentional arson, wildfires are started all the time by dry conditions and lighting strikes, California gets them frequently. I mean, it’s not really a stretch to assume overly dry conditions coupled with 50,000 degree lighting strikes could start a fire.
No one wants your here either, bucko.
Every single Pagan is a White Nationalist larper, so with all due respect, go back to 4chan
Weird prejudice you’ve got there. Not surprising, just disappointing.
Why is everything a conspiracy? What is ironic is how many “conspiracies” during COVID came true like vaccine passports. So being called a “conspiracy theorist” is a compliment. It means I am likely onto something.
A broken clock is right twice a day, but still broken.
A slow clock is never right.
Well this clock is not as broken as you think.
That’s circular logic, which isn’t a sign of intelligence, but rather…
Or you know, warming and lightning and crazy heat. That thing that’s been predicted for decades?
The entire province of BC
iswas forestGlobal warming is drying our forests making them easier to burn. The temperatures have been crazy high this year.
