Yet another refugee who washed up on the shore after the great Reddit disaster of 2023
Need a running list of all the confirmed falsehoods Musk has personally shared. Seems to be increasing.
It was also annoying how much it drove some people to make one line jokes or recycled copypasta in every single thread, looking for the quick upvotes. It made some threads unreadable.
You’re going to get a lot of agreement here: Lemmy decided not to implement it for users. We still use votes on posts and comments, and you can sort by them, but no one gets scored by his many they have, and I think that’s a good thing. Lots of folks on Reddit modify their behavior specifically to generate karma, and often not in good ways.
What are you taking about, he didn’t bait anyone. You aren’t obligated to honor a quote from someone who isn’t in your company. If I said my son is a mechanic and he can put a new engine in your car for $50, you absolutely should not expect a $50 engine.
I didn’t think there’s a specific disorder that results in accent changes. It could be a simple as wanting attention - maybe wanting someone to ask her about it - or it could be she has some psychological disorder.
There is a thing called “Foreign Accent Syndrome,” but as I understand it, it just affects the way your mouth and tongue work in a way that others perceive it as a foreign accent. I don’t think it would cause shifting from one accent to another.
Looks like it. I thought for a moment there was some Tim Curry, but I think just the two.
Why yes, yes it is
There was a post saying it’s too bad they missed, and I said “That’s not the way,” and got a mess of downvotes. People were arguing that me saying we shouldn’t advocate for political assassination means that I’m enabling fascism. I don’t even know what to say to that.
I’m not familiar with those things but, if that’s all accurate, aren’t those abilities themselves things that were naturally selected for?
As others have said, evolution doesn’t really work that way: an individual organism doesn’t make changes to suit its environment. Offspring aren’t carbon copies of their parents, there’s variation of pretty much every attribute. Most attributes don’t really impact survivability, but sometimes they do. If certain things tend to result in an organism surviving to reproduce better than other things, those traits get reinforced and are more likely to be passed on. Over lots and lots of generations, you can end up with pretty much every organism in that species having that trait, and that trait getting more and more pronounced.
Understood, and that makes sense. I do try to look at the conversational back and forth, not just the individual comment. So if I find myself thinking someone I know should read the whole exchange, I’m more inclined to up vote the individual comments, even the ones I disagree with.
Another exception, though, is anyone being an asshole, even if they make a good point. I prefer conversations to be civil, and don’t want to give any credence to a jerk.
Even on Reddit, it was originally understood that an upvote was for a comment that contributed to the conversation, or a post that you’d recommend others see, and a downvote was the opposite. But people just naturally want to make them like/dislike buttons. I’ve upvoted lots of comments that I disagreed with as long as I thought they were a good faith contribution to the discussion.
An exception is when the thread is something like advice or an explanation (e.g., why is the sky blue). I’m not upvoting a wrong answer or bad advice regardless of the broader voting philosophy.
That’s great, at least as long as you’re truly letting go of it and not pushing it down someplace.
It’s pretty easy for me to feel sadness, but anger is just a very unnatural state for me. Probably to an unhealthy degree in that there are probably times when I should be mad, but instead just get despondent.
You misunderstand: I love them so much that when I see any kind of dust or anything on them, I brush them off.
“Things;” I’m leaving that typo, but fixed two others. Proof reading for the win!
There really isn’t a norm. I don’t get mad very easily- I brush off thighs that upset other people - but if I get mad it takes a long time to get over it. I had a gf once who got mad at the slitest thing (often really mad), but would get over it really quickly. There’s a lot of variation. And, of course, it can depend on the issue, too. A guy leaving the toilet set up is different from a guy kissing his gf’s sister.
Thanks for sharing that. I was repeating things trans people in my personal life have said, but as you point out, there’s no single universal experience.
Really glad to hear you’re happier now. It very much sucks that society (and individuals in society) made you feel badly for being who you are.
However I feel in no way that I am in the wrong body.
I’m not trans, but I believe that’s the key. You said “turn out trans,” but I believe most trans folks never really felt like they were in the right body, ever, though they might not have realized what it was that was wrong earlier. It’s not like people wake up one day and think, “oh shit, I’m trans!”
Yep, you get it. And it’s really hard to get people to understand the value in learning to do that stuff without the tools.
We do a lot of real-time control software, and just yesterday we were taking about how the newer folks are really good at using available tools and libraries, but they have less understanding of what’s happening underneath and they have problems when those tools don’t/can’t do what we need.
So if a group of guys came to your neighbors house and told the family that they’re going to move into it with them, you wouldn’t be for removing them, even if that meant a fight? It would be better to just let them move in because that way no one gets hurt?
And if they successfully move into your neighbor’s house, they might have eyes on your house next.
Russia is trying to take over Ukraine, a sovereign country, by force, and other countries are trying to help Ukraine fight Russia. Yes, people on both sides are dying. Ukrainians apparently overwhelmingly believe it’s worth the fight.
