The summer before the 2020 election I was working on some cybersecurity outreach with CISA, UofO, and DHS. The guy from DHS pivoted half the discussions into how much worse that topic had become for them since the Iran Deal was cancelled by Trump. A not-entirely-intended (but well understood) benefit of the deal had been that Iran wasn’t willing to risk it ending by partaking in any overt cyber offensives against the US.

Noise may be something to look for when you’re shopping, depending on where your server lives. I have 1 Iron Wolf drive in my NAS (that is in my living room), and it is way louder than the combined noise of 3 WD Reds next to it.
As for failures, Backblaze publishes quarterly failure reports that I always brush up on before looking for a new drive.
Are any of their old slots up for grabs? I work remote, get paid in a currency that’s not currently eating itself, and I can spend my weekend helping with the rat eradication if that helps with the stamp of approval.

The authors cited studies suggesting that only 7 percent to 10 percent of long Covid patients fully recovered two years after developing long Covid. They added that “some manifestations of long Covid, including heart disease, diabetes, myalgic encephalomyelitis and dysautonomia are chronic conditions that last a lifetime.”
There was that study a week or two ago that suggested every covid infection comes with about a 3.5% risk of long covid if you’re immunized, and 7% if not. As a TTRPG player I can’t help but equate ~5% to rolling a Nat 1 on a D20.

At first (because I’m a rapidly evolving into my final curmudgeon form) this put me in mind of those families that ended up losing their house after appearing on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition because they could no longer afford the taxes and upkeep on their houses. But this line of the article helped put me at ease:

But in the mean time EC2 hasn’t gotten a meaningful feature that’s not to accelerate training or inference since GP3, and people folks are backing away from serverless-first designs because cost-control and other features we’ve been screaming for for several years aren’t being addressed.
Edit to add: on the EC2 side I forgot we got Gravaton3 processors like 18 months ago. That was appreciated for sure.
The majority of our household stuff is on a Synology DS920+ (intel). I installed Docker and Portainer on it and then run most of my local services (Immich, Invidious, Alexandrite (the Lemmy frontend), Miniflux, Dokuwiki, and Heimdall) using the Portainer UI.
I’m still running Plex as a manually installed Syno package, because I haven’t taken the time to figure out hardware trans-coding for other setups.
The 920 also manages cameras (via Surveillance Station), all off site backups (we all backup workstations to the 920 and it backs up online), handles private DNS and the reverse proxy for Docker, and hosts my personal VPN. I’m currently in the process of swapping the 4+ year old drives with new ones what will up my capacity (using SHR) from 12TB to 30 (with redundancy).
