Is there a community for this?
Yeah look at how every single conversation about supporting small businesses went on reddit. Users would rage day and night about the ills of megacorporations. But if you got them talking about supporting small business they’d come out of the woodwork to tell you they’re not paying a higher price. And with things being as tight as they are right now, that’s a logical conclusion. But it just goes to show that even if you sit someone down and explain to them that X thing they say they support absolutely cannot compete with the price of Y thing they say they hate - they will still side with their pocketbook 9/10 times
I don’t think you realize how incredibly short 10 years is in terms of investment recuperation. That’s not realistic unless you’re talking about abandoning capitalism all together, at which point the particulars of IP law are irrelevant
Individuals and small companies would never be able to compete with the resources of someone like Amazon
What’s also fun is the few times I’ve been back to reddit to look at something. Each time I ended up seeing people in the comments with just terrible attitudes. And I thought to myself, “I’m weirdly glad reddit is still around because it gives people like you a place to congregate that I can avoid.”
I’m surprised no one has mentioned a specific filter or trick for just emulating this on modern screens. Surely one exists?
Edit: Literally the comment right below mine: gamescope
Oh boy, Cpt. Kirk’s eye shadow? Just have to tell ourselves that male beauty standards changed over the centuries lol
Hoping that one makes the transition myself. I would also love to see r/AcademicBiblical make the move. It was a great collection of resources and academic-level discussion of ancient judeo-christian religion. I mod three communities right now, and c/BiblicalStudies at !biblicalstudies@lemmy.world is the only one I made with the hopes of one day handing it off completely to someone with more expertise than me. Doesn’t have to be the reddit mods (I disagree with that idea), just someone better suited for that rigorous of a community
In agreement with your broader point but a different approach: to say that we should die out as a species due to climate change is over-simplifying, imo. Yes, there are hardships ahead and we truly need to look at ourselves as a species and ask what needs to change for the sake of ethics and others. However, we have been in dire situations before, albeit with less foreknowledge. Would someone living in, say, 1840 have wished that humanity had died out in the bronze age collapse, when the near-entirety of known civilization collapsed due to climate change?
When considering the entire species we can’t take such a short term view. Yes, hard times are ahead. Yes, we will get through it. I say if one is inclined not to have kids, he should not have kids. But if one is inclined to do so, he should do so
Third party apps were only the tip of the iceberg. The bigger issue is the increasing monetization of data and recommendations across the site. This whole thing is ultimately about who will shape the internet: users or corporations. That’s why it’s silly for people to pretend there’s a neutral opinion

she needs to join a Mastodon instance for sewing but a different instance for knitting
Am I missing something? I thought Mastodon worked just like lemmy where you can subscribe cross-instance
The change was so evident, even for someone like me who (used to) not keep up with reddit drama and inner workings. AMAs used to be so fun, they’d always end up on the front page. I can’t remember the last one (other than Rick Astley’s) that wasn’t a bore
It’s pretty insane the amount of work they did for free. I never even thought about the effort that went into a sub like that. Good for them
Did you spell comeuppance like that on purpose?
We already are seeing this issue with users like kombuchawow
You can block communities, or just curate your subscriptions
If you’re going to break it down that far, why stop? Your “self” is not your central nervous system, but a portion of it - and not a very large one. It’s your consciousness. Most of what your nervous system does is not conscious.
Your self (and mine) are but a small portion of a single organ in a large network of organs and tissues and cells and bacteria. We developed because it was advantageous for our bodies - which predate our consciousness - to have pilots. We are periphery. We are a single part of an ecosystem. And definitely not the center of it
