  • I use DuckDuckGo for search, and it gives you the option to watch full YT videos without actually going to YouTube. I only watch videos that I’ve searched for - not ones that YT suggests to me, so this has been sufficient. Watching this way does not have ads (so far) but it does warn that YT can still use trackers.

    Other’s advice (plugins etc.) are probably better overall, but this is the simplest option for me. I haven’t felt the need to find a more robust solution, but that’s only because of how I use YouTube.

  • My anecdotal experience: I’ve seen more people I know get COVID in the last month than I ever have, including myself for the first time since 2020, and it’s weird because it’s been the persistently hottest weather I can recall in my area too. Maybe it’s because more people have been staying inside with AC than usual because of that, but I’m still worried about the colder months this year.

    It’s good that it seems to be less deadly than it was when it was new, thanks to vaccines, but it’s still an awful experience to get it. I had a different symptom every day for a week, and 2 weeks later I still feel fatigued, like I can’t get enough sleep.





  • Whenever I see questions like this, I know there are going to be a lot of answers about how bad this or that jewelry is, or how traditional rings are evil or a waste of money, or whatever. Luckily I don’t see any anti-marriage replies yet. In any case it’s a good idea to not preemptively use logic and morals to override what your future wife will want and feel.

    But this is the right answer. I think if you’re going to get married, it’s good to be at a point in your relationship where you’re talking about these things and you can just choose ring together, or at least discuss if she wants you to be the one who selects it, or if she doesn’t want diamonds, or how much to spend, and whatever else. You should be as confident in choosing a ring you know she’ll like as you are in marrying the person. The best way to do that is to communicate and do it together.



  • They’re not “passing laws.” They define the minute technical details that Congress can’t cover completely or doesn’t understand. Here’s an example:

    Elected Congress: Don’t sell moldy sausage.

    Unelected FDA: Ok, here’s how long you can safely store sausage below this temperature. If that date is passed or the sausage has been exposed to higher temperature for this amount of time, it must be discarded to greatly reduce the possibility of selling moldy sausage.

    Unelected Judge: Mom said if it’s not green it’s not moldy. Just don’t sell green sausage boys.

    Unelected SCOTUS: Yup, that’s how it’s done.

    My first smartphone was an early LG Optimus. Don’t remember the exact model, but it was a horrible experience. When it was time to justify an upgrade, I tried an iPhone (4S I think.) It did what I need in a phone and more, and it was smooth, responsive, and reliable, unlike the LG.

    Since then I’ve only used iPhones, and also an Apple TV, some HomePods, AirPods Pro, watches, and my wife uses a MacBook.

    My desktop will always be Windows, but I’m increasingly tempted to try Linux. I mean, I’ll never use a Mac. It doesn’t do what I need. The other Apple devices do exactly what I need and they do it well. They’re generally a pleasure to use with only a few quirks here and there - probably no more or less than modern Android devices, maybe? I wouldn’t know. I just haven’t felt the need to switch back to Android, since everything works fine. I upgrade my phone every 4-5 years.

    So I guess it’s all due to a bad first impression, thanks to LG hardware.






  • Some crackers have whole grain versions that taste as good or better than their white flour versions. Goldfish and Cheez-its are the two that come to mind. This doesn’t make them “healthy”, but at least there’s some better fiber in there. Compare nutrition labels.

    Also try veggie chips/sticks. Again, they’re not “healthy”, but… there’s some better stuff in them than normal junk food. They are junk food with a small amount of bonus nutrition.

    Freeze-dried fruit is addicting, but expensive. Try it and/or dehydrated fruit. The latter is chewy while freeze-dried is crunchy and melts in your mouth.

    You can also try making your own nuggets or tenders with whole-grain panko breadcrumbs, and seasoning. The trick is to make it better than McDonald’s, which is easy for an adult, but tricky for kids. I don’t know the magic sauce though.
