For what it’s worth, other Start menu replacements like Start11 and Open Shell’s menu aren’t on the list. This might genuinely be a compatibility-related blocker given that iCloud, EaseUS and certain drivers are also on the list.

tbh I’ve yet to see a KeePass-based password manager that’s not clunky-feeling. Strongbox is probably the best one for that but that’s for the Apple ecosystem.

I immediately deleted my account after realising the free tier doesn’t allow bundling the TOTP with the password. Instead I use KeePassXC on my computer and KeePass2Android + Enpass on my phone.

I’m seeing a lot more hate for Facebook than Apple in one of the cross-posts, but yeah I agree.

Same thing is happening with Misskey. A lot of interesting features there that don’t federate. Wonder how Bluesky is going to handle that in their protocol.

I’ve always had American friends surprised that It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is on Netflix here (UK). Netflix also owned some of the Adult Swim licenses before Channel 4 got the catch-up rights to it.

I’m skeptical on whether this will be a hit with the audience, but at least they’re releasing something I guess. I remember when Microsoft announced HoloLens, which then fizzled out.

To be honest, I’d rather they focus on making the experience similar if not the same across the different platforms. Android still has glaring bugs that the others don’t have (followed playlists still don’t get placed in folders), Windows still has missing features (no half star ratings).

I personally really like the way macOS handles multiple desktops and full-screen apps. Would love to recreate it in KDE.

No prob! These digital voices have been around for over a decade now, maybe more. Some of them use “AI” to improve the sound of the voice (i.e. support more languages than actually recorded, make it sound realistic) but not in the way that current AI voice trends are going.

Not so much an expert rather than just parroting what I saw, but according to a cursory search, and a Twitter community note I saw from a friend, the voice used by this project is Synthesizer V, which is actually a perfectly legitimate piece of software for using digital voices in music production. If you’ve heard of Vocaloid, or know about Hatsune Miku, SynthV is basically a competitor in that space.

Going back to the community note, the voice used is actually called Natalie, and apparently the TOS of SynthV does not allow use of its voices using a name that’s different to what was given. So they essentially can’t present the Natalie voice as Anna, which they are.

EDIT: I want to clarify that these voice synthesisers like SynthV and Vocaloid are usually based on the recording of someone who has consented to the use of their voice in that regard and has been paid for it. It’s not like the current AI voice cloning trend going on.

To be honest, even if they undo that, the damage is done. Trust is lost. And to be honest, after hearing what Spez said about the vulnerable people who post on his site, I wouldn’t want to touch the site even if I liked the official app.

I’m friends with a furry artist and he wouldn’t join fedi mainly due to fears from fediblocking, unhelped by how fandom drama gets in general, not just in the furry sphere, and major drama with mastodon.art using some grifter’s block list which blocks like over 50% of the fediverse.

From what I’ve learned, being friends with him and other artists (and following ones I’m interested in), a lot of creators want a ready-made audience to advertise their artwork to, which was where Twitter came into play and why a lot of them are going for Bluesky instead since it’s recreated that experience for them. It gets hairier when it comes to NSFW content, too, since some places on the fediverse are absolutely fine with it on their timeline, and some places are definitely not. Though Bluesky has popularised CWs for adult content in that sphere, some instances don’t like users posting NSFW and will request it be unlisted if it’s allowed at all.

If the creator is SFW only, they’ll have a lot of good luck using a general purpose Mastodon instance, unless they find a community that suits them better. Joinmastodon.org has a good list, and a lot of them don’t have that networking issue except with very fringe instances.

And even when they say tab hibernation does exist, they’re calling OP a dumbass. If I did that to my friends who want to try Linux, they’d be back on Windows in a heartbeat.

I’ve also been shouted at here for telling a user asking about Vivaldi that the culture here does not like Chromium-based browsers like it and they likely won’t get their answer here. It’s like they wanted me to shut up and not criticise their behaviour.

I think the main issue is the people here suggesting and evangelising Firefox not really listening to those who aren’t, which frustrates the other person. I think I fell into this with the fediverse, in the early days of Elon fucking up Twitter. There are perfectly valid reasons to not use Firefox right now. Maybe one browser or other works better for them, or has that one killer feature they can’t live without. Firefox has that for some of us, too. Or Firefox has some weird quirk or bug that other browsers don’t.

I personally use Firefox and Vivaldi. Vivaldi has tab tiling which is great for when I’m in the zone adding music to MusicBrainz or RYM, and it’s not too clunky either. Tile Tabs WE doesn’t cut it for me. For casual browsing, vertical tabs is nice and I use Firefox + Sidebery for that, which is better than Vivaldi’s vertical tab implementation.

Those two aren’t bad, IMO. It lines up with what people think their principles should be.
