People who love coffee brew it themselves. They don’t need to endure long lines and wait for some poorly treated minimum-wage employees to burn it for them.

I suspect coffee preferences, whether someone makes it for them or not, might be down to whether their place of work is conducive for even making coffee. Perhaps there are socioeconomic lines as well that divide people. Do most people feel the need to have their coffee made for them at a fast-food establishment?

I have had USB-C phones, battery packs and other devices since 2015. Not a single port or cable has failed me so far.

Worrying about the durability of USB-C 7 years later seems unwarranted. But I can see wanting to use up your lighting cable subscription before moving on.

I told my partner, just get the phone ASAP when you can, it’s the only non usb thing we have left.

  • Calgary and perhaps all cities have the same discourse. The car only people get upset when bike paths or BRTs are made.

Given there are lots of roads here that are inaccessible by bike, transit or walking having no shoulders or sidewalks, I’m always happy when another option is added.

I definitely don’t think of Montreal as a driving city but consider that a part of the appeal when visiting.

I bike, walk and drive and am generally happy when all infrastructure is updated.

  • I support progress on heat pumps and really wanted one.

I live in Calgary and wanted AC, had to get a new heater and water heater. We priced out the heat pump, and because of our cold winters would still need a furnace on top of the heat pump. Total quote was $26,000 and we still had to figure out how to fit it all to code in our tiny mechanical room. Getting quotes was like pulling teeth, the HVAC industry seems to hate them here.

Instead we got a new gas furnace, AC, gas water heater, auto water shut off valve with sensors and even the whole house pipes replaced for $14,000 total. The heater is so efficient that it will pay for itself in 3 years compared to the 20 year old one that was in here.

I don’t have an analysis of electricity heat pump costs vs gas if we also had a heat pump. But even with the greener homes rebate it was not viable to get a heat pump yet. Maybe next time?

  • I really really want to move from google workspace, google photos and google drive. I used it all to backup a 16TB archive, sharing photos with family and friends and keeping my personal files in the cloud and synched across computers. I used a Synology to backup the archive from the computer locally to the Synology and offsite to google drive. But here’s the thing, I’m a somewhat PC and Mac-savvy technical guy, but purely GUI. Is moving to Nextcloud on my synology going to be as easy as moving to google drive? I’m a little scared TBH. There are so many ways of installing next cloud and doing 3-2-1 backups and I don’t have time to handle a little error on a Synology destroying my whole workflow for days… Someone give me hope.

  • Hey, maybe all those people listening to mono audio on their little Bluetooth speakers can finally experience stereo or more. Welcome to 1957!

I like this because the only way I buy Bluetooth speakers is if you can buy two that easily pair to create proper stereo separation. In a world where everyone seems to use a single mono speaker, bringing 2 dinky speakers has consistently blown other people’s minds more than any audio setup I’ve ever had and it’s always surprised me.
