I can’t really argue with that. Downloading large files while on the move is going to be very unreliable, and you also don’t want it to happen on your mobile data. I guess I can also see why some of you guys are paranoid about things making the machine overheat, or an unscrupulous OS vendor using the feature to spy on users. Windows Update was one of the worst experiences I had with an OS trying to force my hand, and the thought it could “upgrade” when you think the machine is off would make it even worse.
I was probably just annoyed that my laptop gets hot when the lid is closed and wondered why it can’t just do whatever the hell its doing more efficiently, and partly jealous of the way Apple seem to be able to implement all these nice features properly, but Microsoft just changes the wallpaper and whether app windows have curves on the corners or not in each update of Windows. Perhaps it’s time to try Linux again now I’m not forced to use software that is Windows only.
Fair enough, but I hope it would be something that is able to be enabled or disabled by the user and easily configured to avoid using too much power or data. I was just unsure of why PC laptops seemed to apparently lack the ability to sip power when not in heavy active use, such as when the lid is closed. It’s not the electricity bill, but the battery running out when not on AC power, or the laptop getting hot and generally being inefficient when it’s supposed to be a mobile device that bothers me about just having it keep working as normal with the lid closed.
Thanks for the excellent response.
I wonder if Valve will try to implement it in Steam OS for the Steam Deck’s successor, as a lot of people complained about the lack of downloading while asleep after the Deck was launched. It would still need cooperation in hardware I assume, but they were able to get resuming games working, so it doesn’t seem like an insurmountable problem if there is enough desire from both gamers and Valve.
Intel did make efficiency and power cores separate parts of their CPUs a few years ago, and I wonder if AMD’s can do something similar. Perhaps if Intel and AMD would work with Linux Kernel developers and Microsoft on this feature we could see “power nap” like functionality in the future. Personally I’d like if whatever we had on PC was a bit more configurable than power nap seems to be though, allowing users to set allowable power budget, battery saving conditions and exactly which tasks can run in this mode as well as some power tracking features like on phones to see which apps are using the most.
Assassinating Abe wasn’t right, but when I heard the killer’s side of the story I honestly felt a bit sorry for him. Glad to hear something is being done about the Moonies.
I was watching a video by right to repair advocate Louis Rossman yesterday and he was basically saying that he’s fine to go after big companies and the government to try and get right to repair passed, but he doesn’t want to fuck with Scientology because they appear to be psychos that will harass the shit out of him and probably wreck his life if he gets in their way. Apparently they are anti-right to repair because they have some fake ass thetan reading machines they sell for $5000.
Anyway, he mentions some of the shit they did in his video, and while I’m not sure if it’s a fact or not, he does mention that they were going after the IRS for years to try and get out of paying taxes after laws changed and they lost their tax-exempt status. After a huge amount of harassment and other crime against the IRS over 37 years, they eventually got their taxes reduced from something like a billion+ dollars to $12.5 million… How did they not just end up in jail?
Yeah, the first section made me expect they were going to say “Which is why we’re shutting down and recommending users migrate to Lemmy”.
Of course it’s some crypto bullshit for investors.
Not sure about Google Assistant, as I don’t use it, but for driving navigation I love the British female voice. She sounds ditzy when saying “turn left”, and like some kind of SM mistress when she says “turn right”. I love it. Despite this, I would swap her for a thick Scottish male accent in a heartbeat.
Honestly I try to only use the subscription feed because the home feed is addictive. I installed the unhook addon to block as many recommendations and other algorithmic things as possible, and try to just search when I want to find a particular thing.
However, sometimes I find myself running out of ideas and just disabling unhook and watching a few things from the home feed before reenabling it and going back to subscriptions only. I think if I also disabled ublock, youtube would be infinitely less addictive, since it would shove ads in my face constantly, and I’d soon get fed up.
That’s a really great point. I’m hoping that in the future there will be something like community federation on top of server federation, so that friendly communities that are very similar (not just in name) can be joined together to share content and users and blacklist unfriendly communities. Even if this was something that was done on the user/app side, rather than a real Lemmy feature it would make it easier to follow multiple similar communities, and it would be less of an issue to have the same community existing on multiple servers.
Religions are unlikely to change substantially, I imagine they’ll just find some way to explain the existence of aliens that fits their existing scriptures and world view.
There will be new religions that pop up as a result though, for sure.
Although I loved R-Type 2 as a kid, I never really got into the first one for some reason - it was probably because I didn’t have a pirated copy on my Amiga, whereas I did for R-Type 2. Both amazing games though, and I’m very glad R-Type Dimensions exists on Steam.
R-Type Delta is #1 R-Type for me though. Best level design, best music, best ships before it went completely nuts for Final.
If we team up, only one of us has to read the article and can write the TLDR so we can hit the comments quicker!
I don’t think it will happen until there are enough informed users, unique information and welcoming communities that create a strong reason to come here. Currently it’s quite nice and these things do exist to an extent, but due to the relatively small size the communities feel much less bustling than those on Reddit and I don’t think most people we see any advantages to use Lemmy over Reddit. Lemmy will gradually grow, but unless Reddit completely implodes I doubt there will be a significant enough migration here that we would be able to call it mainstream.
Bottom line won’t change when users of your product are addicted. Since coke etc. are full of sweetener, which I assume causes a similar level of addiction to regular sugar, those that drink it won’t mind if the price goes up 5 cents or whatever because cola put some slightly better sweetener in it. Cola would probably just make a new branded version or slap a “new an improved flavour” on the can and jack up the price by 10 cents anyway. Actually, people are pretty particular about the flavour, so that’s probably why they won’t do it. They must have gradually shitted up the recipe to get to the current version so people didn’t burn down coke HQ.
Well, I guess that solves the problem of me browsing reddit on the toilet then. Just making it easier to stop using it.
I heard that tacos are actually quite good for you, and I assume they could be if you get proper ones with lots of veg and natural ingredients rather than going to Taco Bell or some other fast food place and getting processed defrosted junk.

I was exaggerating, sorry :) I don’t know what that is in today’s money and am too lazy to find out, but it’s a lot. I don’t know exactly the difference between regular home console carts like those for Megadrive and SNES, and those for the Neo-Geo, but I think the main difference was that the Neo-Geo was essentially an arcade system, so didn’t sacrifice anything for the home cartridge version. I think the price was mainly so much higher due to the comparatively huge ROM chips back when memory was rather expensive. Typical SNES games were 8 megabits I think, and the largest (according to Wikipedia) was 48. Neo Geo could go much higher and games were often 100 megabits or more.
Yes. When I can’t be arsed to grind beans and boil water. Doesn’t taste as good, but it’s fine with a little cookie or something.
