I’m cheap.

So far, Conduit is the only answer for me, since I don’t own any quantum supercomputers.

I don’t use RSS for lemmy or kbin communities. I’ve got nextcloud news for RSS feeds, and lemmy for communities I can interact with.

I think it depends a lot on the federated service.

For mastodon, you follow individual users, so if there’s a million users or ten million or a hundred million, their instances will only be contacting other intances they’re federating with so it’s quite scalable.

For Lemmy, you follow communities, so every server pulls all the posts and comments the common community. This means that for an instance like lemmy.world hosting lots of different big communities, every new server hammers the one central instance.

A strategy for improving the situation I think would be to spread the load. Instead of everyone piling into megacommunities, if people spread out into smaller more tight knit communities over many different instances. Of course, this isn’t really compatible with the purpose of having communities like that.

It does seem to suggest that ActivityPub isn’t necessarily the most appropriate protocol for this purpose, even though it’s what was used because it’s the de facto standard on the fediverse.

Probably something going wrong with their back-end.

The pressure on instances has been pretty high since the reddit migration, a lot of things could’ve broken along the way. I know I had to totally dump my database and rebuild my instance a little while in because something went catastrophically wrong during a software upgrade. (Backups? Where we’re going we very much need backups but we won’t have them because the instance was like a week old lol)

I think the concept of an ideal may be flawed. What is ideal changes based on what the current situation is.

That goes for the ideal human body as well as the ideal human philosophy. We need to evolve constantly to fit with our current situation.

People get fat because famines killed people a lot. People have sickle cell anemia because sickle cell traits protect against malaria which killed people a lot. A lot of cancers are caused by mechanisms that protect against things that kill people a lot. Different personality traits that look suboptimal exist because those strategies were successful over time. Yeah these traits look bad when that situation doesn’t exist, but they’re much more likely to help in the aggregate than to hurt particularly with stuff like cancers which tend to kick in after an individual has reproduced so don’t have as much of an evolutionary impact.

A lot of the same goes for philosophies – people tend to follow what works, and what works at one time doesn’t work all the time – ask gen z as they’re given advice by boomers.

All this is one good reason to be wary of genetic engineering. We’ll get rid of all the “bad traits” and be wiped out because some of them were there for good reasons we don’t understand.

No, I’m saying it does work, but other clients might not.

Besides lacking spaces and some rooms not letting you join, (and the lack of admin tools) the only big issue I find is that you plan to run something other than Element as the interface, you’ll have to test it because many matrix clients expect synapse or dendrite and won’t start with anything else. I’ve run fluffychat, I think kchat(whatever the kde matrix client is), and nheko, they all worked well with conduit.

My experience has been that dendrite and synapse totally maxxed out the server I ran it on (100% cpu utilization for days on end), so I run conduit.

The one downside of conduit is it’s a bit behind, so it doesn’t support all the latest rooms, and it doesn’t support spaces yet, and it has minimal admin tools so you’ll want to create all the accounts you need then close logins because bad actors will try to create logins and get you banned from half of Matrix. That said, I can tell you that even on my piddly little server (an Intel Atom D2550), it runs Conduit, ejabberd, nostr, and lotide, and the server basically sits idle. I can’t speak of bridges, unfortunately, because I don’t really use them.

It was the riots that most people I know of had problems with. The violence, the destruction of property (500 million dollars in Minneapolis alone, which is a lot), Secoriea Turner, an 8 year old little girl who was shot to death during protests for the crime of her parents trying to turn the car around in a Wendy’s parking lot. And the opportunistic looting done in the name of the “protests” and defended in the establishment media (how many news and opinion shows had that piece of garbage who wrote the book “In defense of looting” on?)

On the other hand, I was uncharitable in both my examples. Do you think the Canadian truckers were trying to secretly clone Hitler?

So there’s 2 things, I think.

1. Does your bios allow you to boot from SD card? If so, then you can boot from the SD card and so you can install software onto the SD card directly.

2. If you can’t boot off of the SD card, then perhaps you can install all the software on the SD card and then install a boot manager on the main drive. In this way, you boot off the main drive, then let the boot manager deal with loading the software.

You might be disappointed by the performance of software running off an SD card, mind you.

A friend of mine was giving a play by play of the destruction in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and the way she described losing some of those buildings and the meaning some of them held was heartbreaking.

I thought about my own city, and there’s a lot of really old mom and pops that, if some mob burned the building down, are never going to be rebuilt. My city like the areas of many of those cities, are economically depressed, most things we have out there are 70 years old from the economic good times back when the factories were still running.

It’s easy to discount when it isn’t something you care about being destroyed, but think about it it was your favorite restaurant, favorite gaming bar, favorite corner store or book store. You can say it doesn’t matter, but it matters a whole lot to someone.
