I keep hearing people only on Lemmy bring up Gitea but I haven’t really heard of it otherwise. What’s the appeal and what’s keeping it locked away with the Lemmy community?

Are they moving issues or just code storage to GitHub?

I think the YouTube Downloader is paid and they might be getting it confused.

I haven’t personally tested this, so this is all an assumption because of how related things work. But I’ve done extensive accessibility testing throughout the years and things tend to act the same.

On the web app for Lemmy, alternative text should be called out instead of the image (well, alongside since it lets you know there’s an image with alt text). When you use an image as the text of a link (so, what is normally a clickable image) it should call out that it’s a link, then that the link is an image, then that the image has alt text. This is not dissimilar to how things work if the image won’t load and the alt text is shown instead.

On mobile apps it’s the wild west, almost entirely depending on if the app developers put in the additional effort to make all of that information available to screen readers. By default not a whole lot is given other than the text itself so images are often completely skipped or called out without the alt text.

I believe the Pro (or whatever they call the highest trim nowadays) supports USB4.

In fairness there have been hundreds (750+) of Simpsons episodes so they’re bound to have done some that line up with reality. I’m really sick of people saying the Simpsons predicted something considering those numbers.

My understanding is that you’re not going to find a self hosted solution that makes use of SMS (not counting email to SMS gateways) because sending SMS programmatically requires a SMS gateway those aren’t cheap (think of Twilio). You can find many options for app-based notifications (push notifications usually) and email-based notifications as a workaround.

In the US they’re a lot cheaper now than they used to be. You can pick up 3M Aurora N95 masks for about $1/ea in store in many areas. Still not nearly as cheap as surgical masks, but also clearly better than surgical masks.

Edit: I just went and sent them a mention on Mastodon. I noticed it’s an admin account so I wonder if Lemmy lets both flags be set at once.

I personally just started using Owntracks, which is a standalone location tracker. There is also Traccar which I looked into but opted not to make use of.

Some people use it as a Find My replacement, I personally make use of it as a Google Maps Timeline replacement (and have imported my previous data as a result) as well as for Tile tracker location history (which I’ve got custom scripted currently).

Definitely agree with this one, though I will say you can replace one proprietary bit of software (Microsoft Office) with another (Google Drive/Docs) and get a large portion of the way in some industries. Really depends on what you need to do.

But alas, still no widely accepted FOSS alternatives.

I remember way back in uni at a hackathon, our table had a projector on it so of course we connected to it and set up Hacker Typer to auto play and keep typing out gibberish. But then some sponsor walked on by and stared, visibly impressed by what was happening. It wasn’t until they asked for a picture that we realized they had never seen Hacker Typer before. And yes, we took the picture without telling them what it was.

Man, imagine how useful that would actually be though? You’d save a lot of money and headache a few months down the line…

As someone who has very little experience with ActivityPub but is always interested in learning more, what’s the risk of "burn"ing a domain? Does it come from certs or signatures changing on the same domain, causing it to no longer be accepted or something?

I don’t disagree with you about VOA not being 100% propaganda, but I think the thing that RT and VOA do share in common is that they are state-funded. With that being said, WaPo (just like the BBC) isn’t state funded so it’s still a poor comparison.
