It’s not a big deal, and often it’s literally just about whitespace so that we don’t have fifteen different indentation models and bullet syntaxes.

a lot of amazon sellers simply mark working pulls as “refubrished” when all they did was reformat or if you are lucky did a zero fill and check that the sectors weren’t bad.
I don’t trust reburbs that aren’t manufacturer refurbished on any site because its a huge difference in the testing and checking being done.
I do sometimes buy used drives, but I know what I am getting there vs “refurbished” - and there is usually a pricing difference which is why so many are dishonestly calling used drives refurbs.
you want to look at the sellers warranty policies. if if they actually have one besides amazons, the seller is confident in their own items longevity
It has 100% happened before and just never been admitted to. I have both 1st hand dealt with the aftermath and heard from other smaller companies about it. I work at medium sized MSP and disaster recovery is in my wheelhouse.
I’d stop spending all my time on trying to survive and poor all my hours into work I want to do instead of have to do. I have a ton of stuff I’d actually want to do that are very definately work but I can’t make a living doing it, so I don’t!
Thank you.
My 1st thought is that we may need these minor fears to learn how to deal with fear itself and as part of developmemt they’ll likely just be a fraid of something different instead.
Someone tell me why there is even a “womens chess” for them to insanely bar trans people from, gender doesn’t affect chess in the 1st place.
Friendly reminder that only reason 3rd party apps didn’t have reddits ads was that reddot never modofoed the api to push them, and cancelled the agreememt with the one app that was sending reddit add money…
That contingent included me so I am happy to see you here :)
Man the bots aren’t even good at hiding they are bots anymore.
That was just spammed in a news article over and over for hours.
This. We’re just now noticing the spez flies on the corpse is all.
The up/downvote system solidifies that too.
I keep saying this even as former reddit users keep wanting the same damn karma system here :( this isn’t reddit and I don’t want it to be. I hope lemmy’s friendlier culture survives the influx.
I have felt the same way on several lemmy instances now - that whole culture just isn’t here so far. People speak what they are thinking and aren’t randomly crapped on for it. if someone disagrees, they just say so and why. Its wonderful.
my take: up only, no down, per-post only, no account. if someone is repeatedly a problem mods can show them the door.
karma systems have been around forever allegedly to decrease mod/admin workload managing users by having them “self moderate” and that has NEVER been the actual effect - they’ve only ever been an engagement metric for advertising and it didn’t matter positive or negative if people were angry downvoting they were still engaged. I’ve witnessed site after site add these systems and then the userbase turn into a toxic cesspool after. In almost 30 years I’ve only seen one roll back the change even partially. Their culture never fully recovered and its still dominated by people agitating to get attention and to one-up their perceived rivals.
Let reddit things die with reddit. Long live Lemmy.
So go full circle and recreate slashdot? 5:Insightful
I have mixed feelings on this leaning towards “please no, not this”
No rating system can substitute for good moderators that pay attention and users that report when needed. everything else devolves into toxic behaviors.
A busted up acer netbook on a shelf in my basement ran a Final Fantasy XI private server for several years till it died and I migrated to something sturdier.
Display was wrecked, keyboard destroyed, trackpad gone… but a single usb port and a vga port still worked so I was able to install an OS. then I removed those and only ever remoted into it. I actually removed the busted display and keyboard to it’d vent heat better - it ran pretty hot and the ventilation on that thing was designed poorly. The reason the keyboard died was actually heat related, melting its underside and warping it.
FFXI Private servers will run on a 2 decades old potato, so this worked until it finally died despite some seriously pathetic specs.
(1gb ram upgraded to 2gb, 1 ghz intel atom single core cpu, yes really)
the sahara turning fully green could actually be another kind of disaster - parts of the food chain rely on dust from the sahara blowing over the atlantic to provide essential nutrient/minerals for smaller organisms that slightly less small organism feed on.
