This is one of the reasons I practice atheopaganism. It’s psychologically helpful for me to be tuned to the natural, annual cycle. It gives a rhythm to life that’s separate from the more artificial, civil-labor thing. It also inspires gratitude for some of the little complexities of nature I wouldn’t otherwise notice.

Lemmy tell ya something. Reddit was awesome because it wasn’t a platform geared toward optimizing profit.

We’re going to attempt to organize a larger logo and spread the word further around various Fediverse services. I get that a lot of y’all are opposed to visiting over there. I spent a lot of my day writing “Fuck Spez.” I don’t think we’re going to contribute to Reddit’s revenue much, and I think at the very least sending a message that the Fediverse is here is a good thing.

Then consider this a proof of concept. Let’s see if we can even get a little one in

I guess it’s not too different than moving to a new town. The last town is still there, but it’s not the same anymore. Those memories, though… You will make new memories in the new town, but you’ll never lose the memories of the old town.

I think you might really be asking about sustainability, not profitability (profit is what you have after all the bills are paid). It’s generally donation-based. I’m sure different communities will have different ways of soliciting donations.

EDIT: I’m no longer partial to the below. I much more like PrimalAnimist’s suggestions.

For larger, expensive instances, I’m partial to determining the cost of running a single user over some period of time (say, 5 years), and posting that little datum on the community info. Then, each user that donates that amount gets a badge reward. Users that pay double the minimum get a different badge, and so on. Cycle the badges every n years. Some users will have fancier badges, displaying a kindness for the poor and badgeless. Cultivate a culture of gratitude for those who support, and you won’t have to worry so much about not having enough.

EDIT: I’m now also using WefWef, which is virtually indistinguishable from Apollo. I’ve never used Apollo though so I’m getting still getting used to it, but I like it!
