Because they are so restricted ;-) since i moved my whole family onto it, i cut support time by 90%.

I used it for the mac. It was cheaper then buying each new version as a standalone of several software items i used. I can see it work for the iphone as well. You may not need that many apps, but if there are 3 or 4 apps someone uses regulary that are expensive to buy, it can be easier (and like i said, in some cases cheaper) to buy a subscription.

All software has issued, such is the nature of software. I always say if you selfhost, at least follow some security related websites to keep up to date about these things :)

Its not hard really, and you shouldn’t be afraid to ask, if we don’t ask then we don’t learn :)

Look at Caddy webserver, it does automated SSL for you.

Alpine Linux, everything is in containers :)

Maybe somthing like Nextcloud?

It depends on what you want, but here is where i started:

I watched a lot of youtube videos about opensource software. Then i got a nice second hand server that was quiet and didnt use too much power. I installed ProxMox on it instead of VMware (opensource) and then i slowly started to build VM’s for whatever i wanted to selfhost.

A very important aspect that a lot of users ignore is security. You need to keep everything up to date. Follow sites with regards to your software (you can aelfhost freshrss. So thats a nice start) and keep “up” with cybersecurity.

These days i have a small server with Alpine installed on it. Since most my selfhosted things now come in docker. If you go that way, learn yourself everything anout docker and docker compose. Compose is a really powerful tool once you work with docker!

I still think this is how WW3 will start. Russia is provoking to the point that someone will take the bait.

Not to mention that the OP is open for interpretation, and it came across (at least to me) as another entitled person moaning about a free service.

Next to that, teaching people about the selfhost option is actually what lemmy is all about. Not beeing owned by a single corporate entity, so endusers have freedom to choose.

If lemmy want to survive, it depends on people who know how to selfhost it.

Another server (and i assume you mean one with better specs) means more money. Its not just challenging, its also costly.

Alternative you could setup your own lemmy instance, you can still join the community’s on lemmy.world or lemmy.ml or whereever :) and its fun to do.

For me the benefit is uniformity (not sure if thats a word) i can have a matrix account, a mastodon account, a lemmy account, all sorts of fediverse accounts all under my own domain.

This comes next to the already mentioned benefits ofcourse :)
