I still wonder if artificial sweeteners mess with metabolism, say by training people to ignore satiety signals, which would be why we saw that study a few days back saying artificial sweeteners are associated with weight gain.
The Lumberghs in charge haven’t gotten around to bringing in the Bobs, and Lumbergh’s too chickenshit to do the job himself, so…
Some of it is the Disneyfication that goes with the enshittification at the Old Place. In pursuit of the Holy IPO, they banned a lot of that stuff. Some for good reason (child porn, toxic disinformation…), and some for not so good reasons (banning or NSFW-ing weed subs.)
Also happened at Tumblr (which killed it) and Youtube, which makes it incredibly hard on content creators as they get strikes on their account at the drop of a hat for petty bullshit. When a business goes big, and the suit-and-tie caste hear the siren song of stock options, all of the sudden they’ll start Big-Brothering everyone on the platform so some Wall Street boomer doesn’t publicly lose his shit and cause the share prices to tank.
Oh, no doubt.
And there are plenty of groups out there that know how to create …engaging… videos, specifically for the purpose of getting people to hate the Other of the Week. Wouldn’t want the peasants to figure out who’s really screwing them…
Ah, because every protest results in mobs attacking people and breaking things! Nice generalization there.
Algorithm’s designed to promote engagement. Getting angry groups screaming and trying to murder people counts as engagement.
As long as the screaming and arguing happens on their site and drives ad revenue, they don’t care about the murdering part.
I don’t think I even used chat there more than once or twice. Most people won’t notice.
I think it depends on the particular volcanoes. The volcanoes in Iceland and Hawaii, IIRC, have thinner and less gassy magma, so there’s not as much gas buildup, and the eruptions tend to have more liquid lava. Elsewhere, say Mt. St. Helens, the eruptions tend to have thick lava, with lots of trapped gas inside, that tend to cause giant explosions, pyroclastic flows & big ash clouds.
I always root for the bulls!
Hey, cut him a break - do you know how much power Reddit’s app consumes digging through all the information on your phone, watching where you pause in your doomscrolling, sending all that back to Reddit HQ, and darkpatterning you so you get more ads in front of your eyeballs?
Seeing that so much of the traffic on the big social media sites these days is bots, I’m thinking the day that bubble pops is close. Advertisers tend to get upset if they’re spending good money to serve ads to bots that will never buy anything. That, and ad-blindness like you mentioned, and blowback because ads are getting really fucking obnoxious right now. And with Elon’s platforming of hate, and Reddit’s nerfing of moderators, advertisers are going to see their ads displayed next to some nazi toxicity, and that’ll make them upset.
The advertisers will run their analytics, and find that the ads they’re paying for are doing less and less in terms of actually getting people to buy,
It’s going to be a gradual process. We power users, mods & activists make the leap first.
Later, when the collective IQ on Reddit drops another 30 points, more casual users will watch fun & useful content disappear, watch assholes take over, and get pissed enough to jump ship.

My bet is that the fascist troll problems on Reddit will escalate, since many mods left, and moderator tools got nerfed. It very well could escalate until more casual users jump ship.
There’s also a political agenda at play. The Wall Street madman caste finds left wing popular movements to be obnoxious, as they undermine their business model and cost them money.
Note how Reddit’s admins would turn a blind eye to Nazi subreddits and shit like r/The_Donald for years, until the entire planet screamed at Reddit to exercise some basic asshole control.
But when people started talking about punching Nazis, the banhammer came out immediately. Gotta love Reddit’s totally unbiased policies…
When left wing groups get big enough to get things done, Wall Street pulls strings and then you see bans, shadowbans, biased policies & enforcement against activist groups and marginalized groups (LGBT groups getting NSFW’d out of existence), trolling & astroturfing campaigns, mass propaganda, abuse of user data (Cambridge Analytica), ratting activists out to authoritarian governments, nerfing community moderation and letting Nazis go to town while yawning when users complain, while at the same time, anyone left-wing gets instabanned for jaywalking…
Ok, ad blockers may have to move to downloading and bit-bucketing ads to make it appear to Youtube’s servers that we have watched them. Worst case we may have to live with 30s pauses in videos.
Here, now, with the Fediverse, we are going Little Brother on enshittfied social media!
Viva la Révolution !
Not gonna be a sudden exodus.
More that Reddit’s entered a slow death spiral. Redditors will start seeing an upsurge in toxicity, since mods will have left, been replaced with stooges, had their tools taken away, and most of the good mods will have abandoned ship.
Some may come here. Some may move on to Discord or other social media. Some will stick it out on Reddit, but notice that bots and trolls are taking over, whatever moderators are left can’t or won’t keep up, and the admins are seemingly asleep at the switch.
In a few months, discourse there will have assumed Youtube quality, with bots shouting down human discourse, and trolls scaring anyone remotely normal away. They’ll limp along like that for years.
Like Twitter.
Yep. The only way to make progress on that front is to serve Putin some polonium tea…
