  • The organization is proposing to make use of future City development sites by building temporary cabin communities to get unhoused individuals out of the cold until construction begins.

“We know the City of Toronto is planning to build 65,000 permanent affordable housing units on municipal land, however permitting and construction can take five years or more (often many, many more),” 2SH’s Director, Robert Raynor told blogTO.

2SH’s proposed communities would involve 50 lockable cabins, which would offer residents electric heating and AC, safety, security, and privacy.

  • They’re doing some exciting work. Part of what I didn’t understand from the article is quart the funding and membership structure is like. Otherwise, keep doing what you’re doing:

In the last year, the Louisville Tenants Union passed far-reaching restrictions on public funding contributing to gentrification in Louisville; KC Tenants defeated a billionaire-backed stadium tax in Kansas City; Bozeman Tenants United banned new short-term rentals and elected one of their own as mayor in the Montana tourism hot spot; the Connecticut Tenants Union negotiated a collective bargaining agreement with one of New Haven’s largest landlords and Chicago’s Not Me We won ballot referenda backing a landmark antidisplacement ordinance covering the area surrounding the new Obama Presidential Center.

  • Oh literally building wealth as a community:

Community land trusts, housing co-operatives, worker ownership, living wage programs, and other flagship initiatives of the community wealth building (CWB) movement are all finding their way into government policy, with each promising to keep the wealth created by a community circulating in that community.

We’re compensating and getting creative about getting by.
