I’m in the US, but I suspect mail is fairly the same across North 'Murica. (The government would handle super-remote locations still?)
The only mail I get are either bills or trash. Packages usually don’t ship via USPS. I rarely, if ever, send anything.
I wouldn’t cry at all if it cost me $5 to send a letter every two or three years.
Oh. When I said “the west” I was squarely pointing the finger at France. China is playing the longer game there because Russia has stationed Wagner down there already. It benefits both Russia and China if the population is focused on removing French influence. China gets a long term investment hedge against France and Russia gets more cheap mercs for Ukraine.
Now, I don’t really want to spend much time doing a full research project on what is basically a game of thrones’ish style side bet. It’s insanely complicated, I would imagine. After a few African countries went full-on coup d’état a few months ago, I realized there was much more going on.

Chad has some decent gold fields. They aren’t the biggest the world, but they are substantial enough to draw attention. The cheap labor and zero environmental regulation is a value multiplyer as well.
When you add a little flavor the to pot by destabilizing the country and giving the west a bit of a headache, it’s now even more attractive.
The politicians are fine. China probably just bribes them in foreign currency and they sign the deal without even blinking at the interest rates. (Chad has a corruption index of 20 out of 100 with Senegal just a little better at 43.)

It’s a markup language(ish) but it’s not a programming language. XML would be closer to programming, IMHO, since you could have simple things like recursion. That example is even pushing what I would consider “programming”, but anyone can feel free to disagree.
SQL is in the same category for me. It’s a query language and can get super complex, perform some basic logic, but you can’t exactly write “snake” in it. Sure, you could use cmdshell or something else to do something more complex, but that would no longer be SQL.
My simplistic expectation of an actual programming language would be that you can automate an entire platform at the OS level (or lower) instead of automating functions contained within a service or application. (JVMs and other languages that are “containerized” are weird outliers, by my definition.)
I am not trying to step on anyone’s toes here. I just never have really thought about what I personally consider a programming language to be.

Yep. It takes a ton of work and time to build a community that will attract more people who generate content.
With every shit move that Reddit pulls, it pushes more people to Lemmy. While I have zero intentions of being as active on Lemmy as I was on Reddit, I have still racked up a couple thousand comments or so over the last year. Even that interaction generates content, but it’s still only a tiny contribution.
TBH, I just shifted what kind of content I consumed. That did come at the price of doing without some types for the time being. However, the interaction with other users is generally much better here. Many people stay here on Lemmy because of that and honestly, I feel that is a much better experience.
What I am saying is that Lemmy is getting bigger, but it will probably take another five or so years to get the momentum Reddit had ten years ago. It’ll happen because it’s just a matter of time before Reddit is purely investor driven and all value is completely extracted. (It’s just like how Facebook is mostly for old people now.)
It’s done here on Lemmy, but it’s easy to miss on some clients and it’s controlled by the bot creators, strangely enough.
The creator of the first (extremely noisy) bot-clone communities was kind of a dick and wouldn’t highlight posts as bot generated. He had good intentions, but really bad delivery.
We need to build communities here, but that takes time. What I have personally seen is that many niche communities that are on Reddit just fail with Lemmy. (I suspect that most of that is because of the lack of algorithmic boosting.)
I am not saying cross posting from Reddit is a bad thing, btw. It’s my personal preference to read actual user content where I can interact with OP. It’s highly likely that “fake” content just doesn’t pull my dopamine triggers the same way, s’all.
Content is here, but it’s generated at a much slower pace. Honestly, that is much more healthy for me.
Someone tried that and even duplicated the usernames of commenters on Reddit. The idea was to facilitate the transition to Lemmy and people could just pickup where they left off.
It backfired in many ways. Some of the first communities cloned were tech support related and people would spend their time giving answers to bots without realizing it.
It still is a thing, but I just mute those communities. They usually have zero participation by Lemmy anyway.
If I wanted to see Reddit content, I would go to Reddit.

Honestly, the North Korean artillery shells Russia has received prematurely wear out their barrels and have a higher chance of blowing up in those barrels. Given that Russian tank and artillery barrels are notoriously bad quality, the artillery men are probably at a higher risk of dying than their targets.
This is just a supplemental aid package which usually doesn’t make the news. It’s mainly just ammo, spare parts and a few vehicles. These updates happen frequently.
Big packages that are billions of dollars usually include many full weapon systems, lika full Patriot systems.
I suspect that a the line item for “demolition equipment and munitions” was high explosives and grenades for drone use.

If people want to protest peacefully about whatever, that is fine with me even if they are just digging for reasons to protest. Some people just like to get mad about everything. What a waste of epinephrine.
I have my doubts that China needs Russia for anything other than cheap oil and military weapons designs. With Russia tied up in Ukraine any posturing at this point is kind of a silly drill, IMHO.
Who knows… It could be something bigger later, but not now or for a few years after the Ukraine conflict is over.
