Honestly, I think this is the plan. It was super weird for NK to actually blow up roads on the border. With that, combined with the timing of them sending troops to Ukraine is even more sus. This probably has more to do with US elections, than anything else.

From personal experience, these kinds of things are usually based on “security by obscurity” and is just a matter of pushing the right buttons in a specific order.

Unless hardware fuses are physically blown, there is usually a chance. While possible, I don’t think any laptop manufacturer would implement that functionality without an expensive, special order contract.

One is a model “A1989” and another is “A2159”, both of which are at least from 2018.

Any in many ways, that is the way engineers should speak to other engineers when analyzing a problem.

If two or more people can actually share a common goal of finding the best solution, everyone involved should be making sure that no time is wasted chasing poor solutions. This not only takes the ability to be direct to someone else, but it also requires that you can parse what others are telling you.

TBH, this is part of the reason I chose my doctor (GP). She is extremely direct when problem solving and has no problems theory-crafting out loud. Sure, we are social to a degree, but we share many of the same professional mannerisms. (We had a short discussion on that topic the other day, actually. If you could force different speeds and different voltages, you can make some guesses as to what the cable might support.

USB packets use CRC checks, so a bad checksum may indicate a speed or physical problem. (Besides stating the obvious, my point is that doing strict checks for each USB mode gives CRC more value.)

I just looked over the source code for libusb (like I knew what I was looking for, or something) and it seems that some of the driver(?) components hook really deep into the kernel. There might be a way to test specific parts of any type of handshake (for dataflow or voltage negotiation) to isolate specific wires that are bad by the process of elimination.

I think my point is that a top-down approach is likely possible, but it’s probabilistic.

Cable testers can bypass all of the standard driver and USB negotiation bullshit before anything else. I would imagine building a device to manually control when and how the connections are made is much easier than fighting for low level device control on systems like Windows, macOS and Android.

Oh. When I said “the west” I was squarely pointing the finger at France. China is playing the longer game there because Russia has stationed Wagner down there already. It benefits both Russia and China if the population is focused on removing French influence. China gets a long term investment hedge against France and Russia gets more cheap mercs for Ukraine.

Chad has some decent gold fields. They aren’t the biggest the world, but they are substantial enough to draw attention. The cheap labor and zero environmental regulation is a value multiplyer as well.

When you add a little flavor the to pot by destabilizing the country and giving the west a bit of a headache, it’s now even more attractive.

The politicians are fine. China probably just bribes them in foreign currency and they sign the deal without even blinking at the interest rates. (Chad has a corruption index of 20 out of 100 with Senegal just a little better at 43.)
