The Ontario government has agreed to pay $320,000 in legal fees to a class action seeking $200 million in damages for the early termination of a basic income pilot project.

The 4,000 members involved argue the cancellation of a government-run basic income program equates to a breach of contract

Good that they’re getting compensation, but shitty that Ford cancelled this in the first place.

Ontario seems to like shooting itself in the foot.

This particular government is terrible, they tried to developed single family housing on the “green belt” (very fertile farming land, protected habitats, mainly land that shouldn’t be touched by developers), is trying to make a massive highway (413) that will really only be useful to major companies and only save 7 main of travel for those who use it and there is also this

Made us the most locked down place in the Western world during the pandemic, illegally cut nurse wages during the pandemic, paying nursing agencies 3x what nurses actually cost to no benefit of anyone except the agencies, and made us pay for attack ads against the federal government for not closing the border during the pandemic (when the only reason it was open is because Ford wanted more international students during the pandemic).

It’s embarrassing that we re-elected them. You’re preaching to the choir here.

Oh yeah, I could go on for days about how fucked we are because of him. Can’t forget the 7 mil he just paid on ads to tell us how great Ontario is because of him. One hell of a narcist that one is

It’s $80/person before the lawyers take their share. These lawsuits do nothing but make lawyers rich.

Not quite true, it also makes Ford look bad…not that it’ll make much of a difference though.

No, this 320k is ALL for the lawyers. Haven’t even gotten to the 200 million of damages yet.

          Oh I dunno, I just did the math. $320,000 ÷ by 4000 is $80.

Edit: upon further thought, the article doesn’t say if this is the end of the lawsuit or not. Sounds like the $320,000 amount is what the government has already paid to their lawyers to fight it.

$320,000 is the legal fees. The post/article mentions the damages they’re seeking too, which is $200,000,000.

I didn’t read the article though, so I don’t know if they are/n’t getting it (or if it hasn’t been decided yet).

Yeah I added an edit when I realized the article doesn’t say whether or not the lawsuit is over.
