The original “upvote/downvote” paradigm was not about likes, but about whether the post contributes to discussion. But people figured out quite fast that downvoting is effective way to cancel other people opinion. Fediverse attempts to fix it by adding “boost”.
But it is. Always has been, always will be.
At this point I find people coplaining about downvotes much more annoying then downvotes itself.
Especially on Lemmy, which does not have karma BS.
